Gas exchanges and growth of maize as affected by aeration porosity and soil compaction Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Francisca Gleiciane da; Assis Junior,Raimundo Nonato de; Mesquita,Rosilene Oliveira; Marques,Edilaine da Silva; Mota,Jaedson Cláudio Anunciato.
ABSTRACT Based on the hypothesis that less than 10% aeration porosity is sufficient to ensure plant development, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of levels of aeration porosity and soil density on the gas exchange and growth of maize plants. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in randomized blocks in a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement: two densities (1.6 and 1.7 Mg m-3) and five aeration porosities (0.07, 0.08, 0.09, 0.10 and 0.12 m3 m-3), with five replicates. The interaction between the factors did not have an effect on the analyzed variables. Aeration porosity had a significant effect on photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, relative chlorophyll index (SPAD), plant height and biomass production, whose data were fitted by...

Genetic control of aluminum tolerance in tropical maize germplasm Bragantia
Coelho,Caroline de Jesus; Bombardelli,Renato Gustavo Hoffmann; Schulze,Guilherme Stalchmidt; Caires,Eduardo Fávero; Matiello,Rodrigo Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Aluminum (Al) toxicity is the most limiting factor to maize crop productivity in acid soils. Therefore, the understanding of inheritance of Al tolerance in maize is important for the developmentof more adequate procedures for Al tolerant genotypes selection. In this sense, the objectives of this study were to determine the inheritance, and the general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for Al tolerance in tropical maize. First, we evaluated diallel crosses of maize from landrace and hybrid germplasms for Al tolerance through the minimal solution methodology. The DIF data (root growth difference) were analyzed by Griffing diallel model. Later the additive-dominant genetic model proposed by Mather and Jinks (1971) was used to estimate the...

Genetic dissimilarity and definition of recombination clusters among green corn half-sib progenies Bragantia
Silva,Danilo Fernando Guimarães; Coelho,Caroline de Jesus; Romanek,Cristiane; Gardingo,José Raulindo; Silva,Anderson Rodrigo da; Graczyki,Brenda Luiza; Oliveira,Eduardo Augusto Teixeira; Matiello,Rodrigo Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to estimate the genetic divergence among corn half-sib progenies seeking to direct recombination between contrasting and superior progenies for green corn production. Ninety-six progenies were evaluated in a randomized block design with 3 replications, and 18 characteristics associated with agronomic adaptation and green corn yield were measured. The genetic divergence was estimated using generalized square Mahalanobis distance and the progenies grouped by UPGMA and Tocher’s methods. The joint analysis of variance showed genetic variability among the progenies for the characteristics evaluated. The UPGMA method was more sensitive than Tocher’s, since it led to the formation of 11 groups genetically dissimilar compared to...

Lorenzetti,Eloisa; Tartaro,Juliano; Alves Neto,Alfredo José; Stangarlin,José Renato; Portz,Roberto Luis; Kuhn,Odair José.
ABSTRACT Due to the environmental impact generated using fungicides, new alternatives for disease control have been arising, such as the use of nutrients that may act on the development of certain pathogens or decrease the host susceptibility to diseases. The objective of this work was to verify if chelates of calcium, copper, manganese and zinc inhibit the germination of Puccinia sorghi, Cercospora sp. and Exserohilum turcicum spores. Two experiments were carried out: the first with agar-water culture medium, where the treatments and spores were placed at the same moment and the second using corn leaves as substrate, where treatments were administered zero, one, two, three, four and five hours after the spores are sprayed. Calcium, copper, manganese and...

Growth and yield of corn irrigated with saline water Scientia Agricola
Blanco,Flávio Favaro; Folegatti,Marcos Vinícius; Gheyi,Hans Raj; Fernandes,Pedro Dantas.
Corn (Zea mays L.) is an important crop in Brazil and is cultivated in all regions, including the semi-arid area of Brazil, where the occurrence of irrigation water with high concentration of salts is common. Evaluating the growth and yield of the maize hybrid 'AG 6690' irrigated with water of different salinity levels was the objective of this experiment. Sowing was performed in pots with 12 seeds on May 23, 2003, and seedlings were thinned to two plants per pot. Irrigation was accomplished when the mean soil matric potential of each treatment was approximately -30 kPa using water with seven different electrical conductivities (ECi), varying from 0.3 to 4.5 dS m-1, which were obtained by addition of NaCl and CaCl2 in the equivalent proportion of 1:1. The...

Growth, production and water and nitrogen use efficiency of maize under water depths and nitrogen fertilization AGRIAMBI
Campelo,David H.; Teixeira,Adunias dos S.; Moreira,Luis C. J.; Lacerda,Claudivan F. de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth, the production components and the water (WUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in maize (Zea mays L.), as function of water depths and nitrogen doses. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a split-plot scheme with four repetitions. The irrigation treatments applied in the plots were composed of four water depths: 80, 90, 100 and 110% of the water requirement, based on the soil field capacity, while the N doses, distributed in the subplots, were 0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1. Increases in water depths and in N doses promote linear increases in plant height and leaf area index. For cycle I (2015) the maximum yield (16,778.3 kg ha-1) was reached with the irrigation depth of 538.1 mm and...
